How to cut and save video using VLC?

Hi, first post so sorry if this is a dupe.

I'm looking to cut a portion of a video file I have and wondered if I could use VLC to do it. I read somewhere that an older version of VLC had a "record" and "stop recording" function but I couldn't find that on my current version.

If it does exist, are there any other tricks I need to know as far as how to save the clip, etc?

Thanks!

Record button is still in VLC. View -> Advanced Controls

but my suggestion would be that you use proper video editor for cutting, like AVIdemux, Virtualdub or similar tool.

I agree, Avidemux is perfect for that purpose!
