How do I save changes made to a video?

When I make adjustments to a video, such as audio level changes or video brightness changes, there doesn't seem to be a way to save those changes. They are only present when I make the changes while the video is loaded. If I close the VLC player and reload the video, it reverts back to the original state. I'm guessing that this is just a media 'player' and not an editor, but if it is, it's really a shame because some of the effects are really cool and I would like to save them to some of my videos to share later. The only thing I can see for saving changes is the 'Convert/Save' option, but that only seems to save the format conversion- not the video editing I've done. Is there any way to save the editing?

Convert/Save is the right option (so you have to create new file). But you have to apply those filters via Tools -> Preferences... so VLC isn't an easy video editor.

I just now tried using tools/preferences and then used an invert video option but when I converted the file, it saves it to the Video Lan/VLC folder as a .ps file- which when opened up with VLC Player with the invert video option deselected, the video plays without the effect saved and also has no audio.

You have to add the file extension manually (so e.g. myvideo.mp4 or myvideo.ts) when you set output filename. And there are two places to activate video filters in Preferences, Video output filter module and Video filter module under Video -> Filters.

Please, in "LAYMAN's" terms. How, after making any audio & video adjustments can they be 'saved as' for just that particular video for later conversion to DVD format? I use ConvertXtoDVD.

I created this account for the sole purpose of answering this frustrating question.

These f*&^%ng people they're all like x-yz^D to the 5th power yeah super easy! Dicks.

Here's all you need to do save changes (no thanks to anyone here or the VLS wiki page or anywhere else online:

1. Make whatever changes you want.
2. While playing (don't hit stop or anything) click Media in top left corner.
3. Click Save Playlist to File.... (I know, wording makes no sense but that's what you hit)
4. Give this new file a different name (I use v.1, v.2 etc to differentiate but however you like to do it)
5. Tada. Open up the new file and see the magical changes made to the video.

Was that so hard to explain people? jeesh.

Tada nothing.
All that does is save the playlist. It does not save the altered video.

Here it is 2019 and still no answer that actually works. At least not with v. 3.0.6.

We are just a few days away from 2020 and this question is still not answered in anyway that results in a video saved with edited effects. I created this account just to say that everyone who has responded with a method to do this is WRONG, don't bother trying their failed methods. Please, somebody who understands how to coherently communicate in writing and how to use VLC tell us how to save a video edited with effects.

OK, I found a coherent, working technique for saving export files with VLC effects applied. Go here: https://www.vlchelp.com/edit-video-apply-effects-filters-save-permanently-vlc/

preferences > tick the "show all" box in the lower left corner > navigate to stream output, sout stream, transcode > scroll down and tick all the filters/edits you've done. it'll all apply when you convert/stream. i have vlc 3.0.8.

The above solution via save playlist to file does work! You just have to put the extension you want (MP4/MKV/AVI whatever) after the title of your video and it WILL save it as a playable version of the video you edited.

So: make your changes
Media/Save Playlist to File
Input your file name AND the extension
Save
Locate and play

Edit: sorry sorry. Saves the file but NOT the changes. Back to ye olde drawing board I guess...

You can't.

Download OpenShot Video Editor and make your changes there.

I made an account to say that this worked for me, thank you! For additional clarity, after following the steps quoted, the step "when you convert/stream" is as follows: "File > Convert/Stream > Open Media (browse to and select file to be modified) > Choose Destination (I just set 'converted.m4v') > Save".
