Open folder always forgets...

Postby solazy » 11 Jan 2011 17:07

Hi all,
I would like Vlc to remember the last folder I opened, but it always forgets.
Here is the procedure that never works for me :
* (my OS is Windows XP SP2)
* Double click on Vlc icon 1.1.5
* Media => Open Folder : it always propose I:\Videos :(
* Browse through the folder structure and go to, for example, D:\movie1\Video_ts
* Watch the the movie found in D:\movie1\Video_ts
* Quit Vlc

Then, next time I'll open Vlc, why will it propose again I:\Videos ?
Thanks in advance

normally vlc saves last used folder on its own
(may be the ini file is write protected so vlc cannot update it)

but u can edit the interface-config file by yourself
last folder is saved here

vlc-qt-interface.ini

(i am not sure where vlc saves the ini file under xp)

change
filedialog-path=I:\Videos
to
filedialog-path=place here your drive and folder for e.g.

filedialog-path=D:\movie1\Video_ts

but don't change something else in that ini file

Thanks dumbo4711 for your answer.
I found the ini file here: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrateur\Application Data\vlc\vlc-qt-interface.ini
I could edit it (it's not protected) and changed :
filedialog-path=I:\\Videos
to
filedialog-path=D:\\movie1\\Video_ts

But the problem remains, except that now Vlc always propose D:\\movie1\\Video_ts , even if I choose another Video_ts placed elsewhere on the Hard Drive.
Perhaps I should delete all Vlc and start a new installation, maybe it will help, in case something is wrong in Vlc cache.
Thanks for your input.

Reinstall won't help. Removing that %appdata%\vlc folder will reset all VLC settings.

Vlc_help, thanks for your input.
I still confirm it doesn't work and I'll explain why :
* I uninstalled Vlc (selecting "delete preferences and cache") => the folder %appdata%\vlc disappeared during unistallation
* Reinstalled Vlc (selecting again "delete preferences and cache" ... why not)

The 2 only times when the variable "filedialog-path" is modified are :
* Double clic on Vlc icon => Media => Open file
or
* Double clic on Vlc icon => Media => Advanced Open file

I confirm this variable is affected by the 2 precedent ways, as I did many tries just right now (and opened the vlc-qt-interface.ini file between each try to check the variable value, with Vlc closed of course during the variable checking, then the .ini file must be closed before re-launching Vlc)

But this variable "filedialog-path" is never modified if you do this :
* Double clic on Vlc icon => Media => Open Folder
or
* Double clic on Vlc icon => Media => Open Disc (and choosing a folder, as indicates the tip "Select a device OR a Video_ts folder")

Of course, we notice that the variable is named "FILEdialog-path" and not "FOLDERdialog-path", but as its value will always be a folder path, why isn't this variable affected by all Open dialogs, instead of being affected only by the "Open file" and "Advanced Open file" dialogs ?

I remember j-b worked hard on this issue (there was a time when Vlc didn't remember any path)
Don't you think something should be done to remember the choosen path in the "Open Folder" dialog, in the same way that you do it correctly with the "Open file" and "Advanced Open file" dialogs ?

Or maybe you'd prefer to leave this variable "filedialog-path" untouched, and create a new variable "folderdialog-path" related to the "Open Folder" dialog ?

Because the different dialogs don't use same basecode.

That could be added.
