Problem with Record feature

I was testing the "Record" feature with my VCR plugged for the capture device. I didn't specify a location for the save though. I also didn't know how big the file would end up being. So the problem is, I now have a massive 40GB's of space missing and don't know how to get it back. If you don't specify a location for the record save, where does it go? And can I get this missing space back?

The files are saved into either the My Documents folder or My Documents\My videos folder.

Oh okay I found it, thanks so much. As for the file size problem, can you change the output container? It comes out as an avi file and that's way too big.

Record saves in same format as the input is. And container format doesn't create big files (video codec and its settings are the reason video files are big). And before you ask, you cannot change recording options. Trancoding is the way to go if you want to store video streams/files in other formats.

Actually a recorded file could be placed in any directory on your system. I found out the hard way that it picks up the last directory used for the convert/save feature.

So if you want to change what directory the recorded file goes to you have to:

1) Place a small multimedia file in the desired directory.
2) use convert feature to convert file to another format.

This will set the record directory to the directory that you did the conversion in.

OK here i go again this is the second time posting this this board does not seem to be accepting my posts.

VLC save recordings in whatever directory was last use with the save/convert feature.

So if you want to change the record directory you have to do the following:

1) place small multimedia file in desired directory.
2) convert file to different format.

This will set record directory to the directory used for conversion.
