vlc-cache-gen.exe fails to run in old PC

Hello.

I have an ancient laptop (398 Mhz, 156RAM as reported in the system tab) on which I want to install VLC for mp3 and podcast downloading, since movie playing is a bit over-ambitious.

The unfortunate thing is that in the installation procedure, when it's time for vlc-cache-gen.exe to do its magic (I do not know exactly what it does). it fails to execute properly. An error is logged in the windows system console (Administrator Tools > Events), the installation proceeds normally but when I click on the "Run vlc now" nothing happens. Not any output at all. I tried to run vlc from the command line too, but still nothing at all happens.

The error reported points to the address 0x000f73d2 and the exception had a value of c0000001d (i hope the number of zeroes is OK) at the addres 6A6373D2 (libvlccore).

Since mplayer does not offer the same features as VLC, could a developer tell me what's wrong?

Thanks.

Ok, this is probably too old a processor.
Use VLC 1.0.5

I did tried 1.0.5 but while there is no problem vlc-cache-gen.exe (actually I know if it exists at all in that version) there still is no output when I click vlc.exe.

The last version that works is 1.0.3 but it does not include podcast/jamendo/shoutcast/internet support.
