Make VLC the default media player

I am using Windows 7, and the Windows Media Player screwed up, and I have audio, but no video, on a DVD that I tried to watch.
A friend advised me to download VLC, as it was a great player. He said to make it the default media player, but when I downloaded
it, it did not give me that option. Can anyone tell me how to do this? I have tried numerous things to remove WMP 12 with no luck.
Thanks,
Barry

Hi Barry
I have not used windows 7 but are you able to change your autoplay to use vlc? i.e. right mouse click on your dvd icon choose properties > autoplay, then select dvd movie and choose vlc to play as default.

with control panel u can easily make vlc your default player and if u wish use autoplay option too
if u want to assign all supported file types to vlc:
control panel > programs > default programs > set your default programs
now choose vlc on the left side
then "set this program as default"
now vlc will open when u double click on a supported file
if u don't want to assign all supported file types to vlc
u can do as wosco said and assign each file type manually
(right click on file type u want to assign for e.g. mp3 then "open with" or right click > properties "change")
to use autoplay
control panel > programs > default programs
then "change autoplay settings"
here u can choose what windows will do when a dvd or audio cd is inserted
btw: to change file association u need to be logged on as admin

Hey Guys,
I appreciate the suggestions, but WMP still takes over, and I have no video, just audio. I made VLC the default in everything I could find.

Hey again Wosco and Dumbo4711,
I forgot to tell you, that when I try to play the DVD with VLC, a window pops up and says,
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://E:\'. Check the log for details. I don't know what the
log is, or where to find it, and I probably wouldn't know what to do, if I did find it. I also
don't know what "supported files" are. I just want to play this DVD on my computer, as it
plays just fine on my wife's Vista OS computer.
Thanks again,
Barry

Try this in the VLC window:
Tools > Preferences >Interface Settings
Look on that page for - 'File associations'
Click on the 'Set up associations...' box
A new window should open giving you the option to 'Select All' or to individually choose the ones you want to select.
