Hello all,
This is my first post in this forum . I wish to thank you all in anticipation for all your help.
Is it possible to download subtitles via the VLC player ?

No. That isn't integrated into VLC.

Search for and download subtitles from

http://www.opensubtitles.org/

and from

http://subscene.com/search.aspx

or several other places you can probably find by Googling http://www.google.com/search?q=subtitles+downloads

And if you put the subtitle file into the same folder as the movie VLC should load it automatically when you play the movie. BUT, you have to have a subtitle file with the same filename as the movie for it to load automatically I believe. Of course you can go through the Video menu Subtitles:Open file and choose any subtitle file regardless how it is named.
