Clicking sound when converting WMV to MP4

Hello,

I am new to the VLC media player, and am still learning how to use it on a machine using Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit edition with Service Pack 2. So far, I have found it to be an excellent replacement for RealPlayer, as far as playing files is concerned, but when it comes to converting files, not so much.

For example: I'm trying to convert a WMV (Windows Media Audio/Video File) to an MP4 (MPEG-4 Movie). Both the audio and video play correctly, but I notice one monkey wrench in the works: Along with the audio, I get a horrible clicking noise in the resulting MP4 file. What am I doing wrong here?

Also: When trying to convert a FLV (FLash Video file) to any other file, VLC media player crashes on me. What's up with this?

I suppose VLC media player is not worthy of replacing RealPlayer -- yet.

I thank you for any help you can give me on this matter.

Yes, the clicking noise sounds throughout the output MP4 file.
