VLC File association grayed

Hello,
I'm trying to set file association for VLC (tools -> Preferences -> Set up associations) and exclude .bin file type, but it is grayed and disabled (as almost all other types). VLC version is 1.1.4 on Windows 7 Ultimate/32bit. Any ideas?
TIA

Cant remove VLC file assosiactions with GUI dialog in VLC latest verrsion
i want to remove BIN and CUE from VLC association.and make them completely
without association.
elevated admin privilege console commands can
be used to try to solve this but they will not have any effect
on the icons of the file associations shown in explorer.

commands used are:
assoc

a reboot shouldnt be needed so i didnt reboot (whoever heard of having to reboot to

You might find this tool helpful to remove associations

yep without additional tools that modify the registry (or u do it on your own) u cannot completely reset file assosications to windows defaults
but if u just want to change .bin files from vlc to another programm, this can easily be done with windows control panel
Programs > Default Programs
now the 2nd entry
"Associate a file type or protocol with a program"
here u can change every file type to a programm u like (but u cannot restore it to windows default)
if u change .bin files from vlc to another software, and then start vlc
vlc won't assiocate it back to vlc on its own

I've had this problem too. I use binary files in some software I wrote myself and these have a generic extension .bin. I don't want them identified as file type VLC. As others in this forum have noted if such files have been associated with VLC it does not seem possible easily to remove this association. I certainly don't want to go messing with the registry just to do this.
However you can associate .bin files (or any other kind) with a different program. In my case I don't want to open the file with a particular program by clicking on it. It will be called and opened as required by the appropriate software. It's just the misleading file type description in Windows Explorer that bothers me. I have found though that if I associate the .bin type with Notepad (the basic Windows text editor) then in Windows Explorer these files are shown just as "BIN File". This is exactly what I want.
Here's how to do this with Windows 7. In Windows Explorer just right-click on any .bin file. Choose "Open with" then "Choose default program". Then in the "Open with" window make sure that "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is selected. Then click the down arrow at Other Programs and pick Notepad from the list of programs offered.
The particular file you have selected will open with Notepad, probably showing gobbledygook. That doesn't matter. When you close the Notepad window the .bin file type will thereafter be shown in Windows Explorer as type "BIN File". One little snag might be that if you also have .bin video files (the kind VLC thinks it is dealing with) you won''t be able to open them just by clicking on them. But right clicking and choosing to open with VLC will do the trick.
I hope this may be of some help to others.

I would like to understand why the file associations can be greyed, any other software lets us change associations, is it a bug only some of us experience ?
Are you (VideoLAN) going to do something about it (i see those above posts as of 2010 and I still have that issue in 2014 ?
Remember, understanding helps alleviate frustration !
thanks

Still looking for an answer. ALL Associations are grayed out.
VLC player 2.0.8 and 2.1.3 same result
Win7 Pro
Run as Administrator doesn't help.
uninstalled selecting to remove all settings. Reinstall - same thing.
Although, a fresh install of 2.1.3 on Win8.1 worked as it should.

I can't believe this still has not been addressed or fixed by the Devs. I am trying to redo my wireless router and it uses a .bin thats wants to be opened by VLC Media Player and it won't let be de-select .bin files from the association list because all selected files are greyed out. Is Video Lan ever going to fix this? Are you guys(VLC devs) even reading this forum topic?

To revert it to Windows default, simply delete the key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.bin
(as always, make a backup first)

This is a serious bug of VERY long standing. Four years since the last post, it's now 2018 and VLC associates itself with a wide spread of completely inappropriate file types - for example, .zip. Colossally weird and really annoying. And then in 2018 you still cannot change file associations within VLC - then, WHY have that option screen included in Preferences at all? Obvious issue with free/shareware - it's free, we don't have to fix it.

I seem to be having the same issue, but for me i cannot open a file, i can right click on a move and add it to the play list, but from the p[lay list itself i right click and select open file and nothing happens. It is frustrating. I have tried the windows route but to no avail.
