1.1.4: choppy playback with DVD

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
Using vlc (local DVD), video is not smooth -- this is especially noticeable when the movie background is panned. Windows media player plays DVDs without choppiness however. What is the current state of the art to eliminate stuttering video in vlc? I've tried a couple of preferences changes but no effect.
