Freezing when the drive vanishes

Situation: I had a couple of instances of VLC running to compare two files to see if they were really the same file in different formats. The power went out and I found out that the external drive wasn't plugged into the UPS.
One instance correctly told me the drive wasn't responding anymore, the other threw up a blank box. Both were then totally unresponsive and had to be killed via Windows.
