File association icons

Is there any way to alter the icons that VLC uses to display files when it's associated with them? The pylons are nice and all, but I would like to change the icons so I can more easily differentiate them by file type.

The easiest is probably to use a program that will allow you to change file type icons. There are several that will do this (and so much more) and can be found through a quick search using Google or alternate.

[Instructions for Windows XP since i Have no idea what system you are on, but the idea will work with any post XP version] The other way is a but more complicated, but not hard.

First, get yourself some icons and put them in your VLC Prgram Files folder (same place and vlc.exe -you'll see why when you start changing them- typically c:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC).

Next, open up some explorer window then go to "Tools" (in the top menu) -> "Folder Options" and then click on the "File Types" tab when the new window opens up. Next, select the file type you want to change (i.e. AVI), click on "Advanced" towards the bottom of the window, and in the next window that pops up, click "Change Icon...". From there, you should be in the VLC program folder where you put your icons. Select the icon you want and there you go. Repeat for all other file types you want to change.

Thanks!

Excuse me. Do you know where I get other beautiful associated media file icons?

My contribution, g0m icons -> Icon.dll extracted from its .exe setup.

Hi again.

For me, windows xp.
VLC "Portable" allows to change instantly the associated file icons.

Nevertheless, in VLC "Installed" I have to restart the system to showing the changes. Why??

Gom player icons are very nice!, and mpc-hc icons are good.
