VLC 1.1.4 - Artifacts, stuttering and distortions

Postby xenth » 04 Sep 2010 22:51

This seems to happen with MKVs mostly, have tried reinstall, resetting preferences and using an old version (1.1.3)
Also experiencing random "stuttering", cpu load is not the issue here.

Running Windows7x64, Ati 4870(10.7x64 drivers), hardware acceleration is disabled (love it, but it causes artifacts :( )
MPC-HC does not produce these problems

They are always at the exact same time in the video by the way, if that helps.
Any advice very welcome, would love to use VLC exclusively :)

Can you try 1.2 nightly builds?

Thanks for quick response

Using vlc-1.2.0-git-20100905-0002-win32.exe from the /last directory crashes during setup, "Vlc-cache-gen.exe has stopped working"
It does seem to continue setup after I close the errorbox.

Unfortunately the same problems occur with the 1.2.0-git-021009502-0002Twoflower version :(

I changed the setting like the Faq said, it doesn't resolve the issue unfortunately :(

I have the same issues.

Viewing the same file on a Mac Book Pro (Core i7 2.66 GHz, 8Gb Ram) and on a PC (Core i7 2.8GHz 4Gb RAM, Windows 7 x64), the Mac version of VLC 1.14 plays without issues, while the PC windows version has these issues of stuttering, artifacts and blocking described by the OP.

This occurs mostly on MKV, 1080p H.264 files.
However, some files plays very well while others don't, so the codec information is not enough to narrow down the issue.

I also tried to disable the looping, which only made the issue worse.
And the last 1.2 nightly build is even worse...

VLC 1.1.4, a big backstep

Postby Michel Merlin » 08 Sep 2010 09:31

I used to appreciate VLC for its quality, ease of updating, etc.

Last version (1.1.3 I think) finally corrected a long and annoying bug (for which BTW I had sent you, on your request, 2 files showing the flaw, and never seen a reply or a following).

This version, 1.1.4, reinstates that bug, but worse than before. And a couple details show a casual release:
  • it asks for a folder to download. Previous versions just applied the standard procedure (offer to Install or Save; if Save: just asking for confirmation for the default download folder; etc). This is more annoying and worrying than you think: user immediately detects this is an unserious release, so there is a risk for creating a mess in your FS.
  • every file has some noise and stuttering at the beginning, and many have more along the playing
  • there are a couple more flaws that I dont remember exactly right now but no need to detail: I am sure VLC, in their usual quality, will replace this scamped version with a serious one.

Guess I have to steer away from using VLC or recommending it for MKV files at least. :(

Since version 1.1.4 (or even 1.1.3 I’m not 100% sure) I have this exact same problem (with some mkv or avi movies) on my WIN 7 64x PC!
I have no Problems with other Players! At the moment I have to use Media Player Classic!
Hope the VLC problem will be solved soon!
