VLC Player will not install

Hi there,

I very recently re-installed Windows XP Home Edition. However, I've now discovered that I cannot re-install VLC Player (either 1.1.4 or 1.1.3 versions). It always stalls at 'VLC-cache-gen.exe' - just hangs/freezes in a separate Command Prompt-type window, forcing me to re-boot my PC . Any idea why?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Where did you download those installers?

From the official VLC site - here. However, I did download various copies of VLC from other sites - but it made no difference. They all froze, forcing me to re-boot, etc.

You have some additional security tools that might cause problems for VLC-cache-gen.exe?

Like antivirus software or similar.

Yes, it was my security - ie, PC Tools Firewall Plus! It had gone beserk and was blocking everything in sight. I gave it a firm slap and it now no longer objects to VLC player and a host of other 'non-offensive' programmes.
