howto setup framedropping for h264 stream to avoid glitches?

Hi, If I use all default settings (codecs - there are probably 2 options to decode h264, x264 & ffmpeg, etc.), what should I set regarding framedropping in order to get glitch free playback without blocking or image distortion? By default I have videos that play just fine but in case of some more complex scenes CPU obviously is not fast enough and VLC defaults to a type of framedropping/skipping that distorts the image. What are my options If I'd rather see VLC being stuck (or dropping fps) instead of this? The point is - since this only happens rarely, I'd rather have perfect picture all the time (with occasional slowdown) instead of distortions progressing to many frames after. Thanks.

AFAIK the frame dropping/skipping doesn't work like it should, so there isn't any way to get it like that.

ok, thanks; I've tried turning off looping filter and the picture looks good, so it's a way to go
