How to slow down the playback speed?

I see that people are slowing down their playback speed, but I can't find where to do that. I've read that the video has to be playing already, so I've tried right clicking and tried looking at the menu items, but I don't see that function. Maybe I don't understand the words.
Really, I read the FAQ, looked at the wiki, did a query. Thanks for any help.

Right click on the speed label or use the slower button?

Oh, I assumed that button was to back up the playing position. I thought that was a standard.
When I press that button, it does slow down the video, but the sound is missing. It's an AVI file I'm playing, with the VLC index fix. Am I out of luck? Now that I've got the playback fix working automatically, not having a working slow-downer could be a show-stopper.

Tools -> Preferences, then Audio and check that you have Enable Time-Strecting audio ticked.

more convenient is to use
"[" to slow down
"]" to speed up
"=" to reset to x1.0 speed
