No video/picture when playing DVDs with VLC 1.1.2

For the past couple of days since updating VLC to the current version, I have not been able to view my DVDs properly.
Whenever I try to watch something, all I get is a black screen with the VLC logo, but I can still hear the audio playing as if nothing was wrong. As I said before, this is a relatively fresh problem; I never experienced any difficulty in watching DVDs with VLC before, which makes me curious if there's something I'm missing in this current version that I took for granted in previous ones?
If it's relevant, Windows Media Player used to play the DVDs no problem (though not nearly as well ) up until today when I started receiving guff about failing the DVD copy protection on the exact same disc that I watched without any trouble the day before.
I am using Windows 7 and have an ATI card. The DVD I'm trying to watch is disc 2 of Season 4 of the X-Files (if that matters ).
I've looked around a bit but couldn't find anything that solved the problem I was having, but apologies if it's something really obvious and stupid that I just missed.
