WMV files (WVP2/PhotoStory)

Postby petersod » 03 Aug 2010 05:39

I'm using Windows XP and Windows Vista and VLC 1.1.2.

I can hear the audio for .wmv files that were created in MS PhotoStory, but not see the video. I'm not sure when this changed, but I've been using VLC as my default media player for quite a bit of time.

When I look at the codec information for these files, the info screen shows:
Codec: Windows Media Video Advanced Profile (WVP2)

But I can play other .wmv files ok.
But these were not created by MS PhotoStory.

When I look at its code info, I see:
Codec: Windows Media Video 8 (WMV2)

===========
After searching, I found the solution.
Open VLC
Tools|Preferences|Simple settings (left hand side)|Input & codecs|
Check the "use system codecs if available (better quality, but dangerous)

In earlier versions, I never checked this box and these wmv/WVP2 files played correctly.

Did something change so that this codec isn't supported internally?

Is there some short sample file you could share to us?
