choppy audio in VLC

it has been several versions of VLC that when playing back audio files (avi or mkv) the audio is chopped. playing back same files with other players is ok. the problems seems pronounced with larger files (not sure)

using windows 7 ultimate x64. (running VLC on another computer same OS playback is ok)

jbir359: does it work any better if you change video or audio output modules?

I was going through a playlist of mostly FLAC files on VLC the other day when I got the option to upgrade and I did so. After that VLC was unusable for playing audio...I didn't try video. It was choppy and glitchy for FLAC, MP3, and WAV files. Media Monkey played those same files perfectly. Replaced this new version with 1.1.0 (it did solve my problem) until this gets fixed.

AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-37 1.59 GHz
960 MB of RAM
Windows XP Media Center Edition
Gateway MX6455

(forgive me if I did any of that wrong)

EDIT: I did try switching output modules as suggested above and that did not work.

Try 1.1.2, it has some fixes in the audio output.

jbir359: open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start playback. It will complain when stutters happen.

Same story - choppy audio on win7 and vlc 1.1.1 or vlc 1.1.2. In all media files. Same files are played without issue in other players on the same box.

mpgatofixed32 debug: libmad error: bad main_data_begin pointer
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (60000)
main warning: audio drift is too big (156812), dropping buffer
main warning: audio drift is too big (132812), dropping buffer
mpgatofixed32 debug: libmad error: bad main_data_begin pointer
main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (45000)
main warning: audio drift is too big (148958), dropping buffer
main warning: audio drift is too big (124958), dropping buffer
mpgatofixed32 debug: libmad error: bad main_data_begin pointer

video seems to play fine, only audio issues.

Intel core2duo 3.16Ghz 8 GB RAM, load about 10% during playback

A friend of mine had this problem. Even reverting to an older version (1.0.5, 1.0.3) didn't fix it.
However, resetting the preferences from inside VLC seems to fix the problem.
I'm quite sure i chose to delete settings and cache during install/uninstall, but that does not seem to be enough. Only after resetting from within the program did the sound start working properly. I did this on version 1.0.3, but not sure if it is version specific. Running 1.1.2 now with no sound issues.

You are right! reset preferences fixed the audio problem (v.1.1.2).

But now the hotkey assignment for "faster" (my choice "=") does not seem to work even though it IS listed in the preference window.

Also the normal rate does not seem to reset playback speed for Faster/Slower(fine) changes (not sure if this was like this before).

Resetting preferences didn't help, me but disabling built in audio card which wasn't even being used did help.

it seems that VLC audio stutter problems are not gone, I thought they were after resetting preferences, but yesterday i had a wmv file with same problems ;(

I've removed VLC 3 times from my machine (XP SP3, Intel Core i7 with NVidia & HD Audio) for this very reason...Choppy sound.
I've just re-installed leaving about everything on 'default' setting hoping that would do the trick, still very choppy.
This seems to have been going on for quite some time (I've had this machine for about 9 months now).
I tried .8. 1.0, 1.02 and 1.03 seems its still not resolved with ever later releases.
Hope someone sees this has a priority.

I'm going to remove it again and IF it ever gets fixed, please PM me someone!
I've used VLC for a long time, like its versatlilty but I can't deal with this right now.
Thanks
DB
