Playlists without drive assignments for the songs

In all previous versions of VLC I was able to have playlists that didn't have the drive assignment only the path for the songs. When the playlist was given to VLC it looked in the current drive, i.e., the drive where the playlist is, found the songs and all was right with the world. Ah bliss.

At 11 of course.

Version 1.1.0 still does that ... unless the playlist and files are on a drive other than the drive that VLC is installed on (in this case the C:drive) then it gives me an error of:
File reading failed
Your input can't be opened

And just sits there. Silently laughing at me.

Is there a way around this huge problem short of editing over a thousand playlists? I'll change players before I do that and I don't want to use anything other than VLC.

TIA

VLC does not implement per-drive letter working directories and drive letter-relative paths. Nobody ever bothered to write the code to handle this Windows idiosyncrasy.

But according to him
