How to make VLC pause when I click the screen?

Okay, I've been searching around the internet on how to make it to where I can just click on the video screen on vlc to pause it, yet I have come up with unsuccessful results. There are no clear tutorials on how to do it, people just say "durr, use teh mouse gestures!". Well how exactly do you set the mouse gesture to be the pause button click? I've enabled mouse gestures by checking the "mouse gestures control interface box" and I've set the trigger button to the left mouse button, so how in the f do I actually assign pause/play to the left mouse button? I've went to hot keys and tried to make it that, but whenever I click "set" and it waits for me to put something in, whenever I click the left mouse button, it does nothing.
Can someone tell me how to do this? It's becoming really frustrating (mostly because there are no explanations on how to do it).

Single click pause isn't possible with VLC.

Why it is not possible? What if I have a long cable on the mouse, and not on the keyboard? I am sitting on the bed, so, I need left click and pause this is not convenient at all. What a easy functionality and not implemented. Shame.

I think I understood your query. You need to pause VLC using a mouse click from a distance.
I'm using VLC version 1.1.0 Have you tried right clicking on the movie and choosing "pause"?

I also look for this fearure on VLC for a long time. But it is dispointted to me that each time I did a version upgrade.
But I used to play this feature on "media player classic" with K-lite when I need it. I hope VLC can support this,so I only need to install one player in my PC.
I guess this feature may cause some patent issue for VLC. That why they said "impossible".....just a guess..hope this is not true..

I've been wanting this function also for a long time now. It really does seem like a simple function to not have. It's almost mind boggling to me when companies do things like that. Have all these extra features and functions that most people don't even use but then leave out or change an essential thing, in this case, a screen touch pause. For me it is very essential. I Only started using Media player Classic originally because of the codecs but also because at the time it had screen touch pause where Windows Media Player didn't, or at least I didn't then no how to make Windows Media Player do it. (I think it's a setting there. But anyways eventually with MPC occasionally would run into problems and got VLC, like it plays certain file types that MPC wont play, not sure which off hand. And throughout the years I just usually have both players in case I have a problem with one of them can just switch over to the other then figure out the problem or reinstall later, if necessary. Throughout all this time though, even though the image is much better on VLC I have mainly used MPC simply because of the pause thing. I use video snapshot alot, usually with slow motion, yet even the it's hard to get the exact moment. Without a screen pause it becomes a near impossibility. And , like the other user said, I have a wireless mouse and am a little bit from my laptop, but my wireless keyboard has dead batteries, the keyboard on the laptop is close enough to hit buttons if I need to but not to use like for a game or something. Still not sure how that would help. I think on MPC you can press the space bar to pause as well but if I remember correctly this also doesnt' work as a pause on VLC. I did find that I could add screen step forward and backward and speed control to VLC, if I remember correctly that is, as I said, because of the pause thing it sadly is relegated to backup media player, so I hadn't used it for awhile till now, when, while watching the open sequence to this anime I saw a cool image that I wanted for a wall paper, but when I tried to get could not pause at the right time. Being so sick of it I decided to goo online for an answer. That's how I ended up here. Come on VLC, get it together, listen to us fans, it is such a major inconvenience and seemingly such an easy fix for people that no how to make kick ass media players. (Unfortunately, I am not one of those.)
add on: This pause ability, as well as slow motion, and frame step, is very important in general for my viewing style but particularly while viewing porn, where, let's face it, at least one of your hands is mainly going to be busy. >.<

Oh I hadn't seen that post before mine, but I am glad too see others had the same scenario as me with MPC and VLC. I don't really understand the patent thing though. I thought VLC was open source or something. Even if it was owned, the owner can make changes. Otherwise why should we update to the newest version if nothing can change?

hey @vickers500
I know you posted some time ago; however I found your post searching for the same solution; and did this process below:(so I'm posting this as others may also find this while searching for a solution)
https://github.com/nurupo/vlc-pause-click-plugin#usage
Works a charm and is easy enough to do.. just ensure you choose the right bit version.. even tho I'm on win 64 my VLC is still 32 bit.. didn't work for me the first time and then saw those notes.. just run your vlc and start your task manager to see what version it is (it wont show you in 'about')
Finally.. can watch vlc like I watch netflix.. click to pause!
Cheers

No need for complicated solutions! To pause a video just hit the spacebar.

Yes; @hitchhiker; this works if you have your wireless keyboard handy; but this is for the mouse only users..

No I don't have one of those. I just use the standard laptop keyboard together with a mouse.
