Multi speed playback issues

I've been trying to playback recorded .asf files at speed using VLC and other players and cannot get passed x3 without the video jumping and missing frames. I've been through what I think is every setting within VLC with no effect and I can only think it's either the hardware I'm using that's just not up to the job or perhaps a proriertry codec in the recording that's causing the issues.

To be able to play back at x2, x3, x4, etc speeds is quite imperitive to what we do and currently we use VHS tapes and VCR's which have a smooth multispeed playback. We are trying to replicate this with digital recordings. Our current setup uses Dell Optiplex desktops connected over the LAN to the files stored on the server. It may be that the LAN is causing a slow down but I think this is unlikely (but not out of the question!).

Am I barking up the wrong tree thinking this is a codec or hardware rendering issue?

Any help is required and very much appreciated

VLC ASF demuxer has some bugs. Playback will be a bit better in VLC 1.1.0 and if GSOC project gets done, it will be even better in VLC 1.2.0

That's good news. Is there any short term fix that will yield better results?

1.1.0 will be out soon. You can try nightly builds.
