Black in VLC Player not truly black/colour quality issues

Hi, on my computer, the black in VLC player just isn't very, well .. black, I'm sure whatever this is is affecting all other colours and the general picture quality. Take a look at this screen shot to see what I mean . Above is a black part of a video shown in WMP and below is the same part of the same video in VLC player.

And here is one of the overall video quality

Can anyone help me and tell me why it's like that ? I really want to use VLC player but the poor quality is putting me off. I'm running Windows 7 by the way.

Many thanks.

If you look at the first screen shot in my original post, the top player is displaying black and the bottom is basically displaying dark grey. They are both on the exact part of the same video. Basically in VLC Player it looks like there is a foggy haze on top of the video.

I just loaded up the first image in Gimp photo editor and used the colour sampler tool to see how big a difference in colour there is

WMP shows true black, as it should be.

VLC player shows anything but.

They should both be exactly the same.

This should solve it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=72889&p=240603&hilit=YUV#p240603

"Tools -> Preferences... (set Show Settings to All) and then choosing Video -> Output modules -> DirectX and disable Use hardware YUV -> RGB conversions (save and restart after that)."

Thanks , that sorted the problem out great. However , now when I start a video using VLC player , windows 7 switches to the basic theme from the more advanced aero theme. Strange.

Step by step:

1. Open VLC

2. Tools --> Preferences --> Video

4. Disable "Use Hardware YUV --> RGB conversions".

Problem solved, no need to set Show settings to all or anything like that. And it doesn't switch to basic theme in my vista so i shouldn't on windows 7

And here comes a major feature request:

Since all windows drivers since 2007 or so have this problem, why not ship the Windows build of VLC with the hardware YUV to RGB conversions disabled in the default settings?

PowerDVD and others seem to use a similar method to get around the YUV -> RGB problem.

Not in newest patch yet.

I've noticed this too a very long time ago. I always used to just change the contrast. I'm glad this is the official way to do that. I just downloaded the update 1.1.0 from 1.0.5, and the default is still "checked". Not rushing you, but just as a reminder if it was forgotten. THANK YOU for the VLC player!!!!
