Is there any way to prevent VLC Media Player from adding files to "My Recent Documents" in Windows, when opening a file from within VLC?

AFAIK no. The feature comes from Windows itself, which monitors files that are opened via Explorer.

Thanks for your reply.

Could files not be added to "My Recent Documents" when opened from within VLC Player itself?

The VLC uses Windows Explorer open dialog.

So how does WMP accomplish this?

It might work with some additional API commands

Hmmm... WMP can do something that VLC can't. That could be taken as a challenge...

You can send patches to vlc-devel mailing list.

VLC maintains its own list of recently played items which you can switch off via tools, preferences. Windows maintains lists of recently used documents, and you can use prgrams like TWEAKUI to switch that off.

Thanks. I added NoRecentDocsHistory to the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ and set it to binary 01 00 00 00. This prevents Windows from creating the shortcuts.
