Bit perfect audio - asio, wasapi

Hi

Is bit perfect audio possible with VLC?
All I can see in the audio config is DirectX (which has no devices listed) and waveOut, when I was looking for ASIO and/or WASAPI which my M-Audio card supports.
Also other audio apps allow me to select between my PC's onboard Realtek and my soundcard, but VLC doesn't give me those options either - all the options just output via the onboard device.

VLC also has that selection. But the basic preferences doesn't show it.

VLC doesn't have ASIO support (license issues) or WASAPI support.

So is bit perfect possible?

Also I found under All Settings, Audio, Output modules, WaveOut that different sound devices were listed, but the setting makes no difference i.e. audio is always output from the onboard device.

You have to restart VLC after change. With SPDIF bit perfect is possible, I don't know about analog outputs.

OK that worked! Also bit perfect output works fine (I tested it with DTS files).

I saw "Windows Multimedia Device Output" is WASAPI. I use it. My DAC is 130db SNR output to balanced headphone cable. I should have notice differences. But I can't. That means bit perfect is not important! It's what media player and OS audio mixer does is more important.

If you care about audio quality, get rid of F2K. It's a junk audio. Soundstage vanishes.

I tested between DirectX and Windows Multi Media device again.
It "appears" there's tiny sound differences. WMM being better.
However you may not notice this depending on your gears.

This means Windows audio mixer is quite good!
My VLC on Mac Mini sound horrible! Apple's audio mixer s/w is terrible!
