Prevent vlc windows from losing video at end of video

When I watch a short clip in VLC it has the incredibly annoying habit of going back to the small window at the end of the clip. Ie you lose the large vlc windows you were watching the clip in. In WMP the player doesn't get small after the clip ends, so why does VLC do this on win 7 64 bit? Please tell me how to stop it from resizing itself after each clip. It's frustrating beyond belief.
