VLC Screencasting Audio Problem

Hello videolan community!

i am having major problems getting VLC Media Player to work in a reliable manner concerning screencasts including audio. I've had success in capturing a pure video screencast of my full screen. However when trying to record some audio with the screencast I either get no audio or even worse a corrupt video file. I've tested recording audio and encoding it with LAME Encoder (lame_enc.dll) in Audacity with instant success - so the audio input should work.

I am using VLC 1.0.5 under Win XP SP 3
Settings for Video are:
Container: MP4/MOV
Videocodec: H-264; Bitrate: 800 kb/s; Framerate: 5,00 fps
Audiocodec: MP3; Bitrate: 128 kb/s; Channels: 1

I am saving the whole thing to a file named screen.mp4

Am I missing something; Do I have to specify anything else?
Looking forward to any helpful feedback/reply/insights into screencasting with VLC

Thanks

If you capture desktop, you cannot capture audio same time, because slave-input is broken.

Is there a workaround - i've just searched the phrase slave-input is broken and it seems other users experienced the same issues in similar scenarios combining video and audio. Can you tell me more on this whole "slave-input is broken" issue?

Was it working in another release; Will it be fixed in upcoming releases?

Thanks

There hasn't been good slave-input in VLC IIRC. Only workaround I know is to start two VLC instances and record video with other and audio with another.

You might get some traction from getting a second VLC going that records audio and video from the first (?)

I wonder how people like this guy: http://www.sensoray.com/support/videoLan.htm were able to multiplex well with VLC.

His was built against 0.8.6c and I guess it worked...I guess because he only used one directshow audio input and one directshow video input (which works--no slave involved?)

Directshow video and audio combination works.

Hi,
Have the issues with input-slave been fixed?
I am having a similar problem to record screencast with audio. I am using a recent version of vlc (2.0.3)
  • I can record desktop video
    I can record audio deskshow
but adding extra file synchronisation with audio capture does not work in my screencast.
In the UI, the final configuration looks like this when having the option "play another media synchronously" :
[*]dshow://
screen://
:screen-fps=10.000000 :input-slave=dshow:// :live-caching=300

I did select the audio capture device though and when looking at additional dshow option it looks like :
:dshow-vdev= :dshow-adev=Headset Microphone (Sound Blast :input-slave=dshow:// :live-caching=300

If the UI does not take the options properly, could you advise on a command line command that I could use?

Thanks in advance for your support!

/Norrin

PS : I could add log, picture, or capture video of my setup :) , but not sure how to share this on the forum...

hi again... A little typo in the text, should read "dshow://" instead of "[*]dshow://"

looks like you need quotes around your directshow device names

I'm having the exact same problem as Norrin. I did pretty much what he did also (adding an input-slave device to the main Desktop capture), and didn't get any errors, but also didn't get any sound. Video alone, or audio alone, worked, though.
