AAC sound not playing 5.1 (spdif)

All the good quality movies are now mp4 with AAC sound. When I play it in bsplayer, it plays fine - 5.1. But not in VLC, it only plays stereo. I have ffdshow and ac3codec installed.
It's connected to my home theater thru spdif.
Help please...

Thanks for the testing file, I wanted a file like that.
But yea in bsplayer it works perfect DD 5.1, it opens AC3filter and ffdshow.
But VLC doesnt, it only play in stereo. I even went to "audio - audio device" and changed it to 5.1, it sounds little different, but its still only stereo.
And it doesn't opens AC3filter and ffdshow at all.

You have to change it to A/52 over S/PDIF if it is AC3

VLC doesn't support AAC over SPDIF and because VLC doesn't have Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect support, you cannot do conversions with VLC. VLC doesn't support AC3filter or FFDshow.

What if "A/52 over S/PDIF" isn't in that list? I really love VLC, but so far, unfortunately, the only way I am able to watch movies with 5.1 sound is with help of AC3Filter. I don't really need all its features, but it would be nice if VLC could send AC3 over SPDIF passthrough the same way AC3Filter is able to do it.

I am using an USB sound card, and seems like its driver doesn't support SPDIF output (stupid card - stupid driver). Therefore in order to use SPDIF, I have to check "Output SPDIF as PCM" in AC3Filter settings. In their manual it's called "SPDIF-as-PCM trick". What it essentially does is the following:

"Because of PCM nature of SPDIF transmission we can trick the sound card and say that we want to transmit PCM data, but send compressed stream instead."

In VLC as far as I see all we have is "Use S/PDIF when available", which obviously isn't enough for USB sound cards with crippled drivers. Is there any chance of getting a similar "Output SPDIF as PCM" option in VLC in the future? I am sure it will safe a lot of USB sound card users.

I can create feature request ticket for this if you want.

which would be useful for some VLC users as well
I'd say useful for a lot of USB sound card users (the cheapest way to get digital out), because most of this cheap stuff is plug-and-play, it uses standard windows drivers which have some limitations. In short, the point is that besides "Use S/PDIF when available" something like "Force S/PDIF even if not available" would be helpful. Anyway, thanks for opening the ticket. Hopefully somebody will implement this feature some day.

Sorry for the kick, but is this still the case? Ran into a couple of movies (H264) where the English audio track was not located within the mkv, but in a separate AAC file. Couldn't get VLC to play the external audio track at all (not even when opening the AAC directly in VLC) while MPC-HC does it if I manually point to the file while opening the mkv, it's not automaticly detected as extra audio track.
