VLC player does not play video or just crashes

Every time i try to play an .AVI file, the video screen does not pop up. only plays as if it were an mp3 file perhaps. no audio is present or anything. but it "plays" other times itll just crash
what could it be? should i try another software?
im on windows XP SP3. 1 gig of ram. 1.2 Ghz processor
pleaaase help

In my Windows system VLC 1.0.5 does not crash when trying avi-files produced by Canon camera G9. VLC says 'Avi file is broken. Repair ...' . The files however do well using WMP Ver 11.
Not much help, seems to be a common problem
