Does VLC convert filetypes or not?

Postby jleslie48 » 06 Mar 2010 19:15

I'm very confused, first off On youtube there are tutorials all over the place showing a "wizard" and VLC used for converting filetypes, aka, flv to avi, but my version of VLC (1.0.3) doesn't have a wizard. If the "wizard" was removed, it would of been nice for backwards compatabilty and documetation purposes to at least leave in the button and it pop up a message saying this feature is no longer available, or if moved, to what is the new procedure.

I really hate this Micro$oft philosophy of moving around all the commands and having to re-figure out software every new version.

did these functions get eliminated or moved?

So what I want to do is

1) be able to save a youtube .flv file, and convert it to .avi,

2) take any any .mpg, .mov, etc on my computer and convert it to .avi,

3) possibly take a .avi file and its associated subtitles .srt file and combine them so the new .avi file has the subtitles in the avi file.

Thanks in advance, and I'm a bit sorry for the rant. but its very frustrating to see dated instructions and no way to apply them to current software. I did also read the bit about no conversion software discussions allowed, but it said I could talk about it if it was about VLC conversion software (I think, that sticky post needs more information, and reasons)

Eliminated.
be able to save a youtube .flv file, and convert it to .avi,
That cannot be done, VLC has issues with FLV conversion.

And also AVI output doesn't work very well in all cases.
possibly take a .avi file and its associated subtitles .srt file and combine them so the new .avi file has the subtitles in the avi file.
IIRC Soverlay is still broken, so you cannot "burn" subtitles to files.

Anyway, AVIdemux or Mediacoder is the tool you want to use for conversions.
