It is not "little" involved. Porting VLC to Win64 has taken a lot of time to do so.Knowing how little is involved - and how many more Win64 users there are than Mac or Linux users, it's astounding that you haven't at least posted a 64-bit beta. I guess you're too distracted making one for all three BEOS users.
Yes there is. You can use over 4GB memory more easier. And you also get some safety features.there is no point paying for a 64 bit operating system just run run 32 software on it.

they certainly are non-academic examples. The 32 bit programs still have the limit, but since 64 bit OS supports more memory (well at least easier), one can give more apps more memory.
Example
32 bit OS with 4 gigs of memory, you can give 1 gigabyte to four apps and after that they have to swap.
64 bit OS with 8 gigs of memory, you can give 2 gigabytes to four apps, so no need for swapping so easily.
(both examples are non-academic ones, so don't use them in your Operating Systems course)
Which is totally irrelevant since WMP12 uses GPU for some codecs, by default, while VLC doesn't.I have:
-win7 x64
-4gb ram
-AMD Turion 64 x2 cpu
-vlc 1.1.2
I have attached the screenshots of HD cartoon 'Cars':
vlc.png: ~2 minute in VLC
win.png: ~2 minute in Windows Media Player
Maybe there is reason to build vlc x64?
