vlc 1.0.5 and eAC3

Hi,

I searched this forum and found only some older posts stating that with version 1.0 (or 1.0.1?) eac3 support should be included?

But unfortunately when I try to play back a movie with eac3 audio streams only stereo is available? When I check the Audio Device settings I get
to choose from "stereo | mono".
Now, when I open a movie with DTS encoded audio, 5.1 is enabled and working? Would it help to go back to a previous version of vlc?

Thanks in advance,
dlder

Here is the info from MediaInfo:
Audio #1
ID : 4352 (0x1100)
Menu ID : 1 (0x1)
Format : E-AC-3
Format/Info : Audio Coding 3
Duration : 1h 55mn
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 1 536 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Channel positions : Front: L C R, Surround: L R, LFE
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Stream size : 1.24 GiB (7%)
Language : English / /

I don't know if this is a windows only bug, but I'm using Win7-x64.

Hello,

same thing for me.
I record movies on TNTHD with eyeTV, and playback them with eyeTV, sound is sent to my a A/V receiver (Yamaha RXV) via optical link which play it well as 5.1 Doldy Digital.

When I play it with VLC (10.0.5), I receive only 2.0 channel to the Yamaha ! even if the right flow is selected (according to info on VLC, codec is e-ac3).

That works well when I use VLC to play mkv or videoTS (A52 codec) for example. The Yamaha receive well 5.1 Dolby Digital channel.

That means VLC codec eac3 is only stereo decoder ?

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

a short sample of OO7-James Bond (30s) from France2-HD : http://dl.free.fr/vU2x6iJz6
-> 2 audio track in e-ac3, one is stereo and the other is 5.1 and read like this with eyeTV, but in stereo for the 2 by VLC 1.0.5.

Thanks to try and answer me if you have the same result (or if you need more sample)

@VLC_help
Thanks for confirming and opening a ticket! I'm anxiously looking forward for this being implemented (unfortunately alot of new BDs use the eac3 codec)

thx,
dlder

Sorry for necroing my old thread, BUT this is still an issue it seems!

I got notified that this problem still persists, and unfortunately, I can concur:
  • Dolby Test Sample, DVD, VOB, AC3 ... not working
  • Dolby Test Sample, BD, E-AC3 / Atmos ... working!
  • 16 Blocks, BD, AC3 ... not working
To sum it up:
AC3 is NOT WORKING as of v3.0.3
E-AC3 / Atmos is WORKING

(I'm not affiliated or anything and I surely don't wanna do some product placement or what not, but just as a workaround: use MPC-HC; it'll play AC3 just fine!)

AC3 is one of the most used codec. Of course it works in VLC 3.0.x. Your configuration is probably peculiar: share logs.
