Choppy Audio

Postby glisern » 10 Feb 2010 14:02

So, this problem suddenly appeared two days ago. I was going to watch a couple of episodes of Futurama with VLC
But the audio is so choppy. It cuts out for less then a second, every third second or so. The video does not seem to slow down or speed up or stop, but the audio keeps chopping.

I had to resort to the crappy Windows media player to watch the episodes, which plays them without a problem.

Any suggestions/help ?

Waveout caused audio to lose sync for me. The "DirectX Audio output" option seems to fix the stutter and sync seems to be maintained from a quick glance.

I then have to specify a Stereo audio device, after that. As audio is not automatically getting downmixed as it was before (source is 5.1 audio on DVD playback in this example).

I will note that this audio stutter does not happen all the time, and I can trace it to the simultaneous running of certain applications on my system. As long as these apps are not running when I launch VLC, and I do not open them while VLC is being used, the issue is not present. Note that even if I quit the apps that cause this problem, if I do not restart VLC as well the audio issue will continue, even with the other apps no longer running.

VLC 1.1.0 should have little better DirectX audio output module, but it isn't perfect.

Hi, I have a similar issue with 'choppy audio':

I listen to di.fm streams (shoutcast paid link 256k) for many hours during the day.
I do notice now with the latest Vlc player 1.0.5 - every few hours the music stops for a second or two, then it continues on playing the music stream.

I thought ok, there must be a stream issue.

In the evenings I like to watch tv episodes (.avi)
Somethimes mid-way through the film, it has a slight pause (both video and audio) then it continues on playing.

Previous versions of vlc player (1.0.4 and before) had no issues like this.

I have no codecs installed.

Could this be a bug in the latest version of vlc player? Should I wait until a new version is released?

Cheers
Jim

Windows audio problems have bothered every VLC release that I can remember.
