When I try to play a file (.mp4), VLC opens but with no screen and movie will not play. Other .mp4 files seem to play just fine.
Any idea what is wrong?

Could you share us some info from that file? (like used codecs etc.)

similar issue, no idea on codecs used as it was a file i downloaded off BBC Iplayer

We need sample files.

mine was downloaded off Iplayer. just grab any show from there for example data.
if i uploaded it to any of those places i'd be violating my Iplayer desktop agreement with them.
its probably their (the BBC) security encoding that stops you playing them.
i've since been able to play non-protected mp4 files thorugh my version of VLC.

Iplayer doesn't work where I live.
