VLC + KWord DVD2 Capture device = laggy and glitchy

Hi all, long time user, first time poster.

I recently purchased a KWorld DVD 2 Movie Maker, and I was noticing no lag or other issues viewing live video while playing games. It made me curious to try and link it up to a program to view it fullscreen on my computer (since the capture program only has a smaller preview window. I was looking through the various programs on my system, and only VLC seemed to have an obvious option to view the capture directly.

However, while viewing it, there's a large bar on the bottom that flickers between solid green and garbled repeated images of the top of the screen. I checked the options and tried a few different NTSC formats with no luck. I then noticed that the images were greatly lagged (a full second to two seconds, which will not do when gaming and recording).

I would love to get it working, as it's nice and convenient to have a way to play some console games while my wife watches the TV in the computer room, even though my initial intention was just to get a signal repeater to play on TV while recording on my notebook. Any advice at how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

Edit:

Whoops! Forgot PC Specs

VLC: Latest Version (just updated last night)
DirectX: 9.0
CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme (X7900 @ 2.9 GHz)
RAM: 4GB internal installed (yes yes, not using all of it but didn't want to pay later)
OS: Windows XP Pro
Video Card: SLI-configurable GeForce 8700M GT's, currently not in SLI
Video memory: 512 MB
Video driver: 175.16

Screenshot to show the issue? And the DirectShow options you have tried with VLC.

You can see an image of it here: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4 ... =756362215

If you have issues seeing it, I can upload it to my Photobucket.

As for DirectShow Options, I'm not entirely sure what you mean. I have tried the various NTSC formating options (I'm in Canada, so it won't be in PAL or anything else funky), as well as trying some of the interlacing options. Nothing seems to correct it. If I was certain how to record a side-by-side, I'd do so, as it works fine in the software that shipped with it (Cyberlink PowerDirector), except that the preview window is tiny, and really would only be worth using as a secondary output for recording. I mean, I can play on it if pressed, but everything is much tinier.

The other issue is the lagging I saw between command input and display, I tried a few more times and the stream seems heavily delayed at times (once it was a full 3 seconds behind!), where as there's none at all with PowerDirector.

I also tried the verbosity thing to 2, but no messages... I hope some of that helps. Really, this is my first time playing with VLC + Capture device. I'm more used to just viewing files, all of which have worked beautifully.

That is strange. Could you try with VLC 1.1.0 nightly builds?

Sure can! Sorry, just got back to work this week (7 on 7 off), so I missed this being replied to.

I'll try it on Monday, and post the results.

Well, I gave it a try today

Still the same, and the lag was actually worse this time. I dunno what's up with it, to be honest.

Thanks. Could you open Tools -> Messages... (set Verbosity to 2) before opening the device, and after opening paste messages here?

Happens with all video output modules?

I tried all three with the same results.

Is there any way to NOT have it use Direct Show? No matter what video option I selected, it would return to that.

DirectShow is used for video capture.

Meh, it was a thought.

Did you need logs for each of the above selections? It didn't visually do anything different, but possibly the log MIGHT be different... Maybe?

Have you tried different chroma options?

Sorry to seem dense, but I didn't really follow what I need to do. I looked into what you meant by Chroma, but I don't know where to change it or where to configure it.

Also, I have an S-video cable coming in for my XBox (the search for which being why I have not been posting, wanted to see if it made some major difference), but do have one for other systems that I just need to set up to try. Do you think it will make any difference?

With chroma I mean

Code: Select all

--dshow-chroma=<string> Video input chroma format Force the DirectShow video input to use a specific chroma format (eg. I420 (default), RV24, etc.)
and S-video input shouldn't cause any lag since it is analog video.

Well, I just tried the S-video, no change.

And I understand what you meant by chroma, I looked that much up, but where do I put that information?

From Capture device tab, press Advanced options... button, there should be option called Video input chroma format where you can insert different fourCC codes.

Try this ->
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=74059&start=0#p243698

allows me to watch my TV/PS2 at 50fps deinterlaced.

When play, check this, Tools->Media Information->Codec Detail->resolution. It should be 720x586... need to be changed to 720x480...
So, do this, in Capture Device, set Video size to 720x480, or in Options, :dshow-size=720x480. The green bar should disappear.
My problem is when using plugin(Active X) on IE8 browser, I can't get Javascript API playlist.add(url, url, ":dshow-size=720x480") to work. Does anyone know how to make it work on browser?

I use VLC 1.05. Run plugin on IE8 with XP sp3.
