1.0.3 keeps crashing

Hi the forum,
first visit here.
Have been using VLC player for several years courtesy of son no. 1 but nothing technical, only playing whatever WMPlayer and Quicktime cannot.
Since downloading latest version, 1.0.3 it keeps crashing trying to open .bin files. When I try to open a .avi file it says VLC media player has crashed...etc but seconds later proceeds to open and play the .avi file.
I run Windows XP Home SP3. AMD Athlon 2000 , (but upgraded from 64 to 512 memory around 2003/4.) and haven't had problems playing these files with previous versions
N.B. It will play music files.
Thanks in advance for any help
Riggy.

Have you recently updated your graphics driver?
As this only happens with video files, try changing the video output module of VLC in the video settings. Then exit VLC and try again playing a video.

I'm having the same issues. We're you able to resolve this/is this a confirmed bug by the developers.

I'm having the same problem. Mine also crashes with every ".m4v" file. Same results on my Windows XP laptop as my Windows 7 laptop. (personally, I think it's the little santa hat on the icon that's causing the crash since I didn't have this problem before that showed up... so merry F'in christmas)

Could you share us one file that can be used to replicate the issue?

Similar problem...
Crashing while watching mkv files... plays for a few minutes but then video starts to freeze although audio continues... slows my whole computer down for a while even after i close VLC.
never happened before 1.0.3

Similar problem here too. I don't think it has to do with the santa hat icon. I was playing an anime DVD region 1 and it crashes somewhere in the middle of episode 2. I can not skip past the crash point either. I downloaded version 1.0.1 and there were no troubles. I am mostly interested in knowing how I can post more relevant information for the developers. Could I get some tips on how to pull up the relevant data so I can post it here? I want to be helpful.

james438: could you post us the file (or short part of it) that causes the crash?

How do I do this? Where can I find this file that you are talking about? It is a DVD. I am eager to learn what to do and where to find it so that I can help though. Currently I am away from my computer. I'll be home in two days so that I can look at this further.

You can use tool like ChopperXP to cut small part from VOB file in DVD.

I know this is a really late reply. I was away for a few days and I left my computer on. Just before I left I downloaded windows media player 11 and while I was away many codecs were auto downloaded to my computer via windows XP automatic updates. When I came back I was able to watch DVDs on WMP 11 and I assume that this is why when I watched the problematic DVD on VLC 1.0.3 it no longer crashed, but why this would be the case I do not know. I thought that the codecs VLC used were separate from what WMP uses. Ah, well.
As a side note Chopper XP works ok, but the picture is rather distorted. As long as this program gives you what you need I will use it to post problematic files if this issue comes up in the future.
Thanks for a wonderful player

Windows update doesn't offer MPEG-2 decoders.
I thought that the codecs VLC used were separate from what WMP uses.
They are. VLC cannot use DirectShow codecs, so installed codecs don't work with VLC.

doncerim: you have either hardware or driver issues. VLC cannot crash or freeze your PC.
