Can't open vlc

I use Windows XP. I first installed vlc 0.9.8a win 32. After the installation, when I try to open/run the program whether from start menu or desktop shortcut, it just flickers and nothing happens. Then I installed vlc 0.9.9 with the same result. What do I do? I want to play mp4/flv/.vob videos and mp3 audio files.
Thanks

Does it help if you remove %appdata%\vlc folder?

Thanks for caring to reply, but I could not locate any folder or file called %appdata%/vlc.
Idont know if it is relevant, when I boot the computer, I get this error message:
could not locate this file:
C:\progr-1\mywebsml\bar\6.bin\m3plugin.dll
I tried re-installing vlc, to no avail.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Open Window Explorer (or Start -> Run) and type %appdata%/vlc as location.
C:\progr-1\mywebsml\bar\6.bin\m3plugin.dll
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 622AAlUW0y crappy program your AV has luckily removed partially.

Thanks, but run %appdata%/vlc did not help. Nor did the actions recommended in the answers.yahoo.com link.
Is the sad outcome that I just can't use vls?
