Making "minimal view" the default

For a while, I've been using VLC and I somehow had it set so that "minimal view" was the default and the program was set to it whenever I opened it. Just before, I opened a file and there was some notice about accessing the internet and needing permission for updating, so I clicked okay or whatever, then the next time I opened the program, it asked me if I wanted to update so I said yes, it asked me to choose folder, I did and then it gave me some error and resumed its normal action (haven't gotten an update message since). However, now when I open a file, it's not in minimal view by default. I searched through the preferences but couldn't find one and I forget how I had it set to do so automatically previously... so, any ideas? How can I have it automatically set to minimal view?

Thanks
