Hi,
after updating to the latest version of vlc 1.0.3. I get on all videos annoying tearing effects.
With previous versions no problem.
In alle other players WMP, MPC, Powerdvd is no tearing. Also in the options of my ATI HD3850 (winxp 32bit)v-sync is enabled.
Thanks for help

It hasn't to do with vsync. There are othere options for playing film material without tearing. Vsync is for graphics acceleration! Use Media Player Classic to test this. There are extra options to deactivate / activate video sync.
For tearing problem with VLC v.1.0.3 i have found the following facts:

- it only occurs with VLC v.1.03, v.1.02 is OK!
- it doesn't seem to be OS related; it happens on Win XP SP3 and Win 7 64-bit.
- it hasn't to do with VSync!
- both, ATI and NVIDIA GFX produces same tearing!
- for me, only DirectX is buggy. DirectX 3D works fine!
- the slower the PC system, the better it can be seen!
- the faster the video scenes, the better it can be seen! (for example on scenes with waterfall or water that flows)
- i have photographed a buggy scene; it looks like 2 pictures with a big grey line in the middle of it! But it isn't only in the middle of the scene; sometimes it flits from uppermost part of the scene to the bottommost.
- it seems that not only VLC Player has problems with that tearing!! We have build a Media PC consisting of a HD TV-Card and MediaPortal Software (http://www.team-mediaportal.com). Same tearing problems occured... After we reinstalled Windows 7 32-bit, it was fixed!! I think it has to do with new Directx libraries of August 2009! Because after we reinstalled Windows we haven't installed DirectX Redistributale Package again. Tearing then dissapeared!

I just wanted to say that I too have the same problem and after searching the forums up and down I havent been able to fix it all. I have the same problems described above. Ver Batim.

Had anyone tried anything to get this working besides the above mentioned fixes?

My first reaction after updating VLC was to go back to 1.0.2 (see viewtopic.php?f=14&t=67718. :(

After reading some posts about tearing issue, I've tried again to use vlc1.0.3 with different settings (Directx/Direct3D or Open GL) : Nothing changes : tearing is there in any case.

What is so different between 1.0.2 and 1.0.3 that causes such a regression?

(watching DVB-T programs under XPSP3)

edit : maybe VLC1.0.3 is less "light" than 1.0.2, regarding CPU : when I play a stream directly from my DVB-T card, I get tearing. When I play it from a file (same dumped stream), I have not and the CPU is quite less charged. I had already noticed tearing effect when playing 1080p .mov files with Quicktime Player . Maybe you need to change your CPU to update VLC!!!

Same with me as Manu ROSSI reported it.

I just replaced my older home cinema pc with a new one to be able to play HD content as well. On said old computer which has an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card VLC 1.0.3 was (and is, just double-checked) able to use overlay, however, on the new one that has an onboard ATI Radeon HD4200 graphics chip overlay video display doesn't work and I'm getting tearing.

Both machines run Windows XP SP3 with all recent updates. I use the tool from http://wsusoffline.net/ to install Windows updates, the most recent DirectX seems to be included.

When I noticed the tearing I went ahead and messed around with the ATI drivers, but to no avail (I even had to restore my Windows installation from a backup because I apparently broke something in the drivers).

After cussing a lot about ATI and their seemingly bad drivers I decided to double-check with Media Player Classic and ffdshow-tryouts, which surprisingly didn't have any problems at all with the video overlay and played stuff just fine (except that I can't switch audio tracks when playing DVD content with more than one track).

Therefore, VLC apparently wasn't quite as innocent as it seemed at first ... I then found this post and reverted to 1.0.2 and now the tearing effect ist gone for good (although I kind of miss the ability to shift entries in the playlist around, which is broken in 1.0.2).

I like VLC because one doesn't has to fiddle around with video codecs and stuff. ffdshow-tryouts seems to play almost everything as well, but it is kind of complicated and I still don't know how to enable audio track switching with DVDs. So ... I would be very thankful if this would get fixed for VLC 1.0.5.

Hi,
i was to early with my statement about the problem solution of the tearing effect. I tested a lot... no solution
The VLC developer's should get up her asses and solve the problem.
Older version and other players don't have the problem!
Don't try to argue with errors in windows/direct-x....
sry for my clear words...

Setting opacity to 1 works fine : it stops the flickering of the controller in full screen mode.
But it has nothing to do with image tearing noticed since 1.0.3 update (and sadly still there on 1.0.5). Let's say 1% of the regression is solved!

Other ideas :?:
................edit : viewtopic.php?f=14&t=71816&p=238185#p237850 works perfectly ---> 100% solved :D :D
