Automatic download of updates

After I click Help>CheckForUpdates and choose where I want the new version (if exist) to save to, I get an error message saying "Failed to open [save location] for writing", depending on where I try to save it; e.g.: when I try to save it to C:\Desktop, I get the error, but when I choose C:\, it downloads without a problem. I've had this problem with both of my computers, both of which have a clean Windows installation with no junk software running in the background. Thanks anyone who can help.

Autoupdating doesn't work. You have to download latest version manually.

Duh! Is anybody trying to fix this? Downloading a file is a pretty basic task for a program, methinks.

Each time I open VLC I get that there is an update. After I click ok to get the update a window comes up to download the update. I choose download folder for the file but I get the folder can not be opened to download. I then chose other folders still the download cannot happen. What am I to do?

Don't use automatic update. It is still broken.
