VLC 1.0.3 and Windows 7 (file association)

Hi guys,
Installed shortly Win7 RTM works fine.
Installed VLC 1.0.3, which works fine, but there is a usage problem with file association dialog: VLC does not appear in that dialog.
So if i click onto the "start", and wanna manage file associations, i click onto "default programs", then i click onto "set your default programs".
VLC is not there, in earlier versions under Vista it was there, so i could associate filetypes.

hi,
Just logged in to the Admin account, go to the "control panel > default apps" dialog, or right-click a file and select "Open With..." VLC media player shows up in the list of available programs. File associations are able to be modified as expected.

This is what i've done:
As administrator run VLC. (By default you're not administrator like in XP - you have to right click on VLC link and choose the "run as administrator" option).
Then, go to menu Tools > Preferences. in Interface Settings look for File associations and press the "Association Setup" button.
There you can select all you want.

Vcorle, that method does not work for me.
I am running it as Administrator, in fact I have the built-in Administrator account active, and that's what I use.
Everything was fine until I had to run WMP to play an IV50 file. Now all my associations are stuck to WMP.

Solved my problem.
All I did was turn languy99's post into a .reg file.
You can download it here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?0ulymzniz52
Then after that
Goto Control Panel
Default Programs
Set Your Default Programs
Select VideoLan Client
Set this program as default -OR- Choose defaults for this program

Hi,
Had the same problem but stumbled too late over this topic and created a new one
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=69164 instead. However I did found the solution to this problem (but I’m happy if somebody else would fix it).
As mentioned in the third post of the above link the problem is as follows (short version): The installer adds the appropriate registry keys in vista but fails to add them in windows 7.

For me the file associations were properly made when installing VLC on Win7 64-bit. True it does not appear in the "default programs" section but it works anyway.

Sorry for the dumb question...
I downloaded that file. What do I do now?
I want VLC to be my default program, but I can't figure out how to do it.
Thanks in advance...

Double clicking should merge it to registry. After that Window Association thingy should show VLC and then you can select it as default program for those file types.

That didn't do anything for me. It just opened up the file with notepad...
Is it supposed to be placed in a certain location?

You have to rename the file (delete the .txt extension) so you have only one .reg extension.
But it does not work.
PS: I have german Win7 x86 system...

Just because VLC does not appear in the list of "Default programs" does not mean that it is not associated with the files, the list of "Default programs" is far from complete as not many programs support that Windows 7 feature right now.
Go to the "File association" list, there the actual associations are shown.
Just install VLC normally and chose during setup to associate it with the file types you want. Then your files are associated with VLC, also on Windows 7.

@arairr919:
@languy99:
Wanna solve the problem?
Just download VLC Setup 1.0.3 and run it (the setup of course) in compatibility mode for Vista SP2.
So following steps needed:
1. Uninstall VLC.
2. Go to your VLC Setup (vlc-1.0.3-win32.exe), rightclick on it, choose Preferences, and set the compatibility mode for Vista SP2.
3. Run the Setup now, choose your associations properly.
4. Go to that dialog (set default programs) and manage your associations there.
PS: I am sure, that will be fixed in the next release of the application...
