I'm using 1.0.2 on Windows XP SP3, and everytime I try to open VLC after I restart my computer, it crashes unless I reset the preferences and cache files... it wouldn't be so bad if it did this every once in a while, but every time I try to open it without reseting, it simply crashes...
Anyone have any suggestions?

Yes... I can't figure out what errors there might be because if I don't reset the cache files, the program won't open... once I clear the cache and reset the preferences, it works just fine... no other problems...

Well, I mean, it doesn't even open enough to close it... nothing happens, and when I try to open it again, it says "VLC media player just crashed. Would you like to send a bug report to the developers' team?" I click "Yes", and nothing more happens...

I'm more geared toward hardware troubleshooting, if you know what I mean...

For us it is hard to figure out the reason for the crash without debug info.

Tell me about it... normally, I'd disable all the software that might interfere with the program... but, since I don't know, I have to go through them all one-by-one, I guess...

I've downloaded gdb... I'll see if I can figure out what's going on...

New development: if I logon, go back to the login page without signing off (via "Switch Users"), then log back in later, it works fine...

I have the same problem.
VLC 1.0.2 on Windows XP Pro, fully up to date, AMD CPU.
I have re-installed 1.0.2 and it runs and plays videos if I execute it as an Administrator.
If I run it as a 'Limited User' - it crashes on startup, whether I am opening a file or simply starting VLC from the start menu.
No window, no nothing, just the crash dialog.
I have added VLC as an exception to the firewall, to no avail.
It used to work on previous versions.
Any suggestions?

I recently began to experience the same problem using Windows vista except mine had started a while back playing then crashing after a while. I had the older 0.9 version for over a year which never gave me any problem until I recently downloaded the latest version few months ago. I listen to a ton of lectures using vlc and so play them at a faster pace and tend to replay areas I need to listen to over again but I had noticed that after I do that a certain amount of time, then vlc will shut down with the message ‘vlc.exe has stopped working’ and I would close the program but restart again and it work. When I restarted vlc, it would ask if I wanted to send a report to the developers and I would choose yes but nothing ever happened. As I mentioned earlier, recently it would just shut down as I start it up with the same message ‘vlc.exe has stopped working’, check for online solutions which I select and nothing happened. I have, rebooted the computer, uninstalled and reinstalled the program but nothing changed. Please can you help me find a solution to this problem. I am not very versed with computer terminologies so I copied the ‘problem details’ I got from the ‘vlc.exe has stopped working’ message. I have no clue what this means but thought it may be helpful. Thank you for your assistance.

willow: have you tried to remove %appdata%\vlc folder?

Where do I find it.

How disable "Report bug" at restart???
I make a little loop in a batch file for this problem, but this window stop the restart..

willow: Open Windows Explorer, and paste %appdata%\vlc to address bar.
