Why YUV to RGB conversion?

its turned on by default and i have no idea why this thing is considered in the first place, when all it does is make the video look more whiter and ruins the contrast as well as the colors of the video. it is quite similar to quicktime's high gamma video look. i turn it off for that reason but i want to know why its turned on in the first place and why does quicktime's videos look washed out.

You display driver work incorrectly if the YUV to RGB conversion does that. For this reason there is an option to disable it.

nVidia drivers are so broken it is not even funny anymore.
This colour contrast issue is a nVidia "Feature"!

How can it be the fault of the driver when ffdshow and Microsoft decoder do not have this problem on default settings (same problem here on 1.1.0 with NVidia 9800GT)?

Because they use special renderers.

Because they use special renderers.
But if the problem occurs for all NVidia products why don't you just make VLC disable the feature for NVidia cards automatically? Otherwise many people may see the washed out colours and not even bother continuing to use VLC because they don't know they need to disable the feature.....

Because it is way too slow.
So you are saying you put speed above image quality??

Why limiting all users because of some nVidia bug?
