Sound refuses to play

For some reason, a day or two ago, VLC media player stopped playing sound. I made sure sound was enabled, but it still didn't work. I remembered today that I changed the sound to a wav output because I wanted to record the sound of a video or something, however, when I changed it back to the default sound output, the sound still doesn't play. Videos themselves play fine, but their audio won't. I am using 1.0.2 on Windows Vista. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Reset preferences and cache.

I've done that, and the sound still doesn't work. Restarting my computer didn't help either.

EDIT: On that note, a reinstall didn't work either.

Does it help if you rename vlc.exe to vlc2.exe?

Hmm, it does, thanks. Why doesn't it work with vlc.exe, though?
