A solution for Windows 9x/ME users

Since 0.8.6f VLC don't support these old versions of Windows anymore, unfortunally (they really needs VLC powerfulness).

KernelEx should be the - open source/free of course - suggested solution for them, IMHO !

Check this forum too, many answers there, for example:
and the last VLC media player 1.0.0 from Videolan work with this version

Not the latest version (4.0 final 2): i used the 3.x series in the past... I hope to try the new version soon.

Meanwhile, you can ask directly to the author (Xeno86) to certify the VLC functionality.

From this 3ad:
VLC 0.8.6 is the latest release with support for this operating system.

Please note that these versions of Windows are not officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes them hard to support. VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems. The two MSLU files need to be put in the C:\Windows\System\ folder.

Warning: The following package is not up-to-date with the latest official version of the software. When using an out-of-date version, you may encounter important bugs or security holes.

:(

I am quite disappointed... I tried it some months ago. All i received was crash screen.

FFDShow is in my system only for solving of compatibility issues. Surely it is not a good decompressor. I tried it with Progdvb for Mpeg2 decoding of digital TV. IT IS TERRIBLE.

FFDShow is mainly a reason why i maintain special Mpeg2, Xvid and sound codec for quality purposes such as dvds... I got one old CRT monitor by IBM. Its image is crystal clear :)
Hi ,

you don't use KernelEX v4.0 ? :?
see : http://www.msfn.org/board/kernelex-4-0- ... ntry872324
(my post #207)

and I can say the last version VLC 1.0.1 work better than the prévious 1.00 with KernelEX v4.0 final 2

VLC Windows XP and Me

VLC Windows XP and Me

Excuse my frustration and possible misplacement of question, but...I'm about to give up, but before i do, i would like to know about MY VLC: Version 1.0.5 in compatibility with OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600 (see full after text) and Firefox 3.6.3, as well as information (below) on the VLC Plugin, compatibility with or necessity for (if any) the following applications I have already downloaded and installed in what I thought was correct procedure for setup as I understand it: firefogg, oggcodecs_0.83.17220-win32.exe, and a couple others that I am too confused to list...so if you someone wouldn't mind helping, or directing this to someone who would, I'd be very grateful.
i don't want to spend the next 3 days looking through over 50 differently directed links, sublinks, etc., from and to multiple domains trying to operate a VIDEO system...no matter how great it is (or free). And while I admire the --please stay polite-- out of the 24-year-old who invented it, the PC and/or Internet were not even invented when I graduated University; however, the inventor might have liked some of our Louisiana mushrooms, which I see he's very fond of--genial, igneal, mon ami!. [/i][/b] And while I've made more advances than most my age at keeping up, the information I've found here is stifling, as was the first query I made to this forum (seemingly squashed by the same fungi-loving administrator for allegedly discussing outside conversion programs (all because I had included a link to a Faq and Help page for Ap**an to show an example of something that was both basic, UNDERSTANDABLE, and COMBINED ON ONE PAGE.
I've also spent the last day or two in the same endless search for the existence of a Firefox 3.6.3 VLC Plugin.
And although it is listed on my MOZILLA Plug-in Profile: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.4)Plugins installed * Version 1.0.5, I couldn't find it or check to see if it was working in my VLC profile. OR IF THESE THINGS ARE HELPFUL OR COUNTERPRODUCTIVE: Vlc context menu by Helga Tauscher
VLCWatcha by mp3butcher BOTH FROM FF PLUGINS SEARCH UNDER 'VLC'.

And excuse my ignorance but I can't even discover (my fault) if my Windows XP is the same thing as Windows 2000 to know if I even downloaded the correct version of VLC?

To show good faith (and redeem my complaint), I had installed the pre-release version of FF 3.6.4 but uninstalled it upon finding that it didn't play well with my VLC.

Hi all,

I have just joined.
Please can somebody bring me up to date on what I need to do in order to get VLC working on a laptop with Windows ME installed. I have previously installed VLC v9 on an IBM Thinkpad with XP no problems.
(leaving on holidays soon and want to bring some movies for kids on old laptop..)

thanks.

If you are using any OS version below XP SP3 then you should all go somewhere and die quietly.

Software will always move forward to newer things (for better or worse) and if you can't move with it, you shouldnt be using a computer. It's people who dont upgrade that hold the rest of us back because developers who design and build great software (such as VLC Player) have to split resources up just to cater for the dinosaurs, when they could just amalgamate their efforts (smaller work load is always better when you dont get paid) into the latest stuff for people who actually want to move on to bigger and better things.

Basically the solution is, upgrade your windows OS or learn to use a Linux flavor.

The end.

Dear Mr DinosaurDestroyer,
I've been using the internet for years and I'm a member of lots of bulletin boards. It really depresses me when I come across comments like yours, couched in terms which indicate your own superiority and everyone else's inferiority. People come here looking for help. Noewcomers especially get put off by comments like this. Maybe that's your personal intention, in which case it shows a lack of generosity of spirit.
It's perfectly possible to state your opinions of 95/ME without being insulting. And since it's obvious that the creators of VLC no longer support 16-bit windows, in fact I doubt very much requests for 95 support are holding anyone back.
When writing software myself (web based) I regularly hear people saying programmers should provide no support for anything but latest browser versions, because upgrading is so easy. If (when it's released) I decide to support only IE9, and insiste everyone upgrade, I'll probably break loads of other apps which rely on IE8 or other versions; the same applies to Firefox 3.6.whatever compared with 3.5 3.0 or 2.0. i.e. software writers look at the market share of operating systems and browsers and try to support what will keep the majority of users happy, within the scope of the resources they have available.
The authors of VLC have already made statements elsewhere about what they're prepared to support (or not) and why.
Please calm down. Go take a pill.

It is easy: on Windows, the policy is to try to support all supported versions of Windows...

You cannot expect modern software to run on 12 year old processors...
My 12 year old process came with Win98. I ran WinME until 2008.
VLC would run on my 12 year old processor with WinME but won't now with XP?
VLC should fix VLC 1.1.x !!!

What a blithering idiot!!!!!!

Some of us PREFER OUR PRIVACY and ON THE NEWER WINDOWS OS's,YOUR PRIVACY IS SEVERLY COMPROMISED!!

Newer Software is often over bloated with crap one doesnt want or need, doesnt look as nice,etc..... (Same with most NEW things)

My favourite os is Win98se .. I think it looks THE NICEST,is the most user friendly,etc.......

The NT-line of Windows OS's have a terrible history of being comprimized remotely via web-based exploits. Win-9x/me have never been vulnerable to network worms (for example) and many other exploits (heap buffer overflows, java shell, flash, etc) don't function correctly on win-9x/me. I don't particularly care if win-9x/me doesn't offer desktop login security the way NT does. For the home / soho user, user rights and permissions is just a lot of bother.

Just go to secunia.org and compare the vulnerability history of win-98 vs win-XP. Win-98 has 35 listed security issues up until mid-2006 - and practically all of them are minor. Win-XP has hundreds of security issues over the same time-span, and many of them are critical.

That is simply not true. Exploit of modern vulnerabilities are certainly more likely to hit more recent Windows versions, but Win9x has had its share of remotely exploitable and exploited bugs. I'd bet some Win9x worms like Opaserv are even still alive on the Internet.
