Although many YouTube videos are available in a High Definition format, VLC seems to record them in low definition. Is there a way to record the higher quality?

Give VLC right URL.

So when the URL for the HD version is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHM6w246d38
and the URL for the Normal one is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHM6w246d38

What to do?

It appears the switching from normal to HD is a Flash function, not a different URL, but VLC streaming only seems to play the normal version.

Firefox and downloadhelper extension. When downloading choose [HQ22]"name of video", and it will be downloaded in mp4 format. If download starts and doesn't move from 0.0% just refresh the page of video that you are downloading.

Video URL is different. Browser only displays the YouTube player page URL.
