right-click > 'play with VLC' stops working

Hello all,

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. I am posting this here is because I'm running Windows XP as my operating system...not sure if others with different os's have experienced the same issue or not.

On both my desktop as well as laptop, when I first installed VLC I had absolutely no problem right-clicking on a video file, telling it to 'play with VLC media player', and having it work the way it's supposed to. Suddenly, from one day to the next, that has stopped. (This happened on my laptop about a month ago...it just happened this morning with my desktop.) When I right-click and tell it to 'play with VLC' it does nothing. However, I can open VLC first and search for the file, or simply drag-and-drop a file onto the player and it works fine. I just prefer the faster convenience of the right-click 'open' option.

Has anyone else experienced this issue, and can anyone tell me to to correct it? (Restarting the computer won't work, by the way. It still does the same thing.)

Thanks.

Does removing %appdata%\vlc folder help?

No, I tried that and everything is still the same.
I'm curious - what was the purpose of the 'application data - vlc' file anyway? Was it not actually needed for some parts of the program to work?

%appdata%\vlc folder stores VLC settings. Sometimes the settings do get corrupted and might cause issues.

Could you check what options are used for files associated to VLC? (so open Windows Explorer and Tool -> Folder options and File associations tab and choose some filetype associated to VLC)

I use Firefox instead of Explorer; it doesn't give me Folder options under Tools. Do you know where I could look?

Hi, eclecticspirit,

VLC_help said WINDOWS Explorer not INTERNET Explorer - he is talking about the tool you use to peruse your computer's file system NOT your Internet browser. Hope this helps.
