Trouble regarding VLC, H264 Encoding, & PSP Encoding

Postby Zachstar » 16 Jul 2009 01:55

Hello all!

I have not posted on this forum for a great while. This is due to me having great success using VLC to play files in the past. And even a small amount of encoding (Mpeg 2, Ogg based) so first off I want to thank the team for providing us with such an amazing piece of software.

I am sure I could go on about my past experiences all day but that is not what this topic about which has to deal with my recent experiences.

I am currently planning a trip to another state. With plane tickets as high as they are I am forced to use the bus system. A 12 hour trip at the least. So I decided I would like to take my PSP with me. And use it to watch TV I recorded over the years. And various clips like mission footage from the NASA website. I claim fair use doing all this as it is for me only.

The issue is. Well VLC is not exactly playing nice with the exact specs the PSP needs to actually play a video clip. The codec types are listed here http://manuals.playstation.net/document ... types.html I want to use the h264 system because it handles the lower bitrates needed (Under 200k) FAR better than Mpeg 4 part 2. I have 2 4gb memory sticks but if possible I would like to try to fit everything into 1 so I don't have to exchange them on a darkened bus.

This is a multi issue topic. I would like to keep them together because they all relate to the PSP.

Issue #1 An issue I call (Not finishing) the convert. H264 encoding causes VLC to crash (Issue 2) So this is about Mpeg4 encoding for now. Whenever I try to convert the program seems to finish the convert but when I test play it back in VLC it does not list the resolution and extra info that say a video from google video (Saved in PSP form) has. This results in the PSP saying "Corrupted data" and unable to even start playing the file. I dont know the exact name for this issue. But I will post here screenshots (Below) showing the issue.

This image shows the converted video info. Only basic info is shown

This image shows a file that plays on the PSP its in AVC but the audio is the same notice how it shows alot more info?

Issue #2 VLC outright crashes when trying to encode to h264. I hope it is just something I am doing wrong because this is a serious issue in my view I installed the older WIndows 98 version to test if it too had the issue and it did not but it has the same problem as Issue 1.

"""Note! If issue 1 can be resolved I do not mind using an older version of VLC to do the encoding work""""

I know I ought to post the config files and setups and all that. But I hope this is a simple issue that can be answered without having to dive into all that. I will post them if need be tho.

OH BTW I forgot to mention that I am using Windows 7 RC1 build 7100. That may be the cause of Issue 2 but if that was the cause why would an older version work?

1) H264 should crash VLC 0.9.9 on windows, but not VLC 1.0.0
2) Could you try to share your command line?

I would suggest that you use another tool for the job. Mpeg 4 part 2 has some bitrate issues with VLC and current QT4 GUI doesn't allow you to specify needed parameters for x264, so you won't get PSP compatible files.
