Multiple AVI codecs

Postby nonnus » 23 Jun 2009 02:23

I'm running VLC on a Windows XP HTPC. I also have an extender connected and am running into problems. If VLC is running a video feed to our family room TV, the extender can't access the AVI codec (for some reason beyond my knowledge) to play back files. Does anyone know a method to install multiple instances of AVI files, or is there a way to identify the coded VLC should default to?

Thanks

What extender are you talking about?

Hauppauge MediaMVP. Has been stable for me, playing back from a SageTV install. Have been able to get the MVP software to see and play back the AVI files, but not if VLC is running. From what I am reading, it seems there are multiple AVI codecs and should be able to differentiate. The MVP doesn't offer any controls for this, so I am trying to see if VLC will allow me to identify a codec that is different from whatever default AVI coded Windows uses.

I guess I also need to figure out how to control the codec Windows uses. I've researched this a bit, but am not doing very will with identifying the proper terms to even begin to get successful search hits to lead me in the right direction.

Any help is appreciated.

VLC doesn't use DirectShow or VfW. VLC has build-in decoders and demuxers, so it doesn't use Windows ones and because of that the issue shouldn't be related to codecs+VLC.
