I apologise for bumping this old thread, I've been surfing around looking for a solution to my problem as well.
I've always used VLC player for watching any video file on my computer, but suddenly there's no sound on any file I play.
I'm trying to watch all my avi files and non have any sound.
This happened one day to the next, and I have no idea why.
These files did not have any sound on windows media player either, so I thought it might be a codec problem. Therefore I installed Ac3 filter, and now there is sound when I play the avi files on win media player, but NO SOUND on VLC player!
Nothing untowards seems to be happening on my audio settings on VLC, audio in on, S/PDIF is off (I tried changing this to see if any change but nope), outgoing sound is set on default...
I uninstalled VLC player and downloaded it again but it still has no sound.
This is distressing and I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.
Thank you.

VLC can't use AC3filter or any external codecs, so (un)installing them won't help with VLC. And did you try the tip I gave earlier?

you mean removing the user/appdata/roaming/vlc folder?
If that's the one you mean, I did but nothing happened.
It's very strange. I'm no genius with computers, but these things are designed to be used by dummies, and with a bit of logic and intuition I've always been able to at least figure out what the problem is.
But here I got nothing.
The same day as the problems started, I also started getting this pop-up when I first open VLC player, something about videolan not liking me downloading cd covers (??). I'll write it down next time it comes up, but it doesn't look like it's relevant.

Does it help if you change your audio output module to Waveout?

I've changed the output to all the different options. Each of them yielded no improvement.
The video plays fine, but the audio is missing.
Also note: I'm on Vista

YES!
Renaming to vlc2.exe works!
Thank you for your help, it was a very distressing situation (I really can't do without vlc player). Please, what was the problem, and how did renaming the file help? How did it happen, no sound one day to the next without me changing anything?
This is just curiosity, I'm glad you solved the problem, I'd just like to learn something from it for the future.
Thanks once again.

What can happen there?

It is Windows Vista audio mixer that causes issues. Because in Vista (and 7) the mixer is application specific, it can mess up single application to mute. Because the mixer identifies the application by its name, renaming helps. There is also some way to reset the mixer values, but I don't know how to do it.

I am in the same boat.
Suddenly I have no sound what so ever in my Mac using VLC.
I removed and installed a new one but same results....it played perfectly even after I updated the system, but now nothing.

This thread has been very helpful in working out why I'm getting no sound from VLC all of a sudden. The final step of working out how to reset Vista Mixer's settings was more difficult that I expected as Google didn't prove much help. So, for the benefit of other users with the same problem or even VLC developers (is this only happening since v1.0.0?) here's the registry key I had to delete to bring VLC back to life...
Code: Select all
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore\2c8ae02d_0]
@="{0.0.0.00000000}.{c3f740ae-a380-4215-8b3f-2ef4bdd62cb0}|\\Device\\HarddiskVolume1\\Program Files\\VideoLAN\\VLC\\vlc.exe%b{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore\2c8ae02d_0\{219ED5A0-9CBF-4F3A-B927-37C9E5C5F14F}]
"3"=hex:04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,80,3f,00,00,00,00
"4"=hex:04,20,00,00,00,00,00,00,10,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,\
00
"5"=hex:0b,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
I'm guessing some of that will be different on another system, so I'd just go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore and search for vlc.exe.

Okay, so I have the same problem, video works just fine on my vlc but I have no sound. So I figured I'd try renaming it like you sugjested, although being my some what computer illiterate self I have absolutlely no idea how to rename vlc. So if you would be so kind as to tell me how to rename vlc I would greatly appreciate it. Sound works on the computer (windows meda and others) just not VLC I tryed uninstalling it a few different times and re-downloading it, but to no avail. Thanks for all your help!

Search vlc.exe from your computer (use Windows search if you don't know where it is), right click the file and select
rename.

Thanks for the help, but here is the situation.
if I type vlc.exe in the windows search, it says there is no items. But if I type just vlc i get a file, so I right click and select open file location, witch takes me to another short cut file, so I right click on that file and select open file location again, witch take me "where i'm guessing the file was downloaded". In that location there is two VLC files one file is just plan 'ol VLC with a cone icon beside it. the other is called vlc.exe.manifest. I renamed the file vlc.exe.manifest to vlc2.exe but it didn't change anything. So I changed it back, and changed the other file VLC to vlc2.exe, and then vlc wouldn't even open any more...almost like the programb wasn't even there any more. If I changed it back to VLC then it would open again. So maybe I need to change the shortcut name? Well I'm not sure what to do!! I need a little help! Thanks!!!

You need to change all VLC shortcuts and registry entries if you want to use vlc2.exe as before. What alphie suggested earlier is better trick.

I too have no sound when playing certain files with vlc.
i have changed the vlc shortcuts, but am not sure about the registry entries. does that include the files that are in the sdk folder?
vlc worked perfectly fine for me in xp but now i get no sound on some files while using vista.

Its kinnda a pain, but the way i actually get the sound to work is opeining the file derectly through VLC and poof the sound works...i did rename all the short cuts and changed the name in the redgestry as well. but you know just open VLC up derectly click on media and open folder and go to the video you want to play and see if that works for you....GOOD LUCK!!

rouge00:
playing certain files with vlc
means that it is VLC issue, not Windows. So please open up your own topic.
